Health and Nutrition Lesson Plans

Preventing and Reversing Diabetes…

Our Food for Life diabetes classes are health and nutrition lesson plans and cooking classes for type 2 diabetes prevention and treatment.

We run these classes with PCRM on the Education Alliance Program with the goal of advancing diabetes prevention and reversal through nutrition education and research.

The Food for Life Diabetes program was developed by Dr. Neal Barnard, M.D., (the president and founder of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine), and Caroline Trapp, a diabetes educator and nurse with more than 20 years of experience in diabetes education and care. Many registered dieticians also contributed to the program.

The health and nutrition lesson plans and classes are taught by cooking instructors who are nutritionists and/or dieticians. Each of our instructors will inform you of their qualifications and will provide general nutrition information as appropriate.

All information that will be given is evidence-based, meaning that it will be backed by published research.

With these diabetes health and nutrition lesson plans and classes, you can particularly start to see changes in your health and body very quickly, so ensure you work with your doctor throughout.

Please note that the information presented in each class is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment of your doctor. Always seek the advice of your doctor for any questions you may have regarding a medical condition.

What Can You Expect to Learn?

In each diabetes health and nutrition lesson plan, you will learn:

• How prevent type 2 diabetes.

• How to reverse type 2 diabetes.

• How to reduce cholesterol in your diet.

• Phenomenal information on how to lose weight.

• How to eliminate the main sources of unwanted calories.

• What particular foods mostly provide unwanted calories.

• How to increase fibre in your diet. Fibre foods help you to lower cholesterol and gets you full quicker so that you end up eating less food than you normally would have.

• How to get protein from plant sources.

• How to incorporate more water-dense foods into your diet quickly and easily. You can start adopting them straight-away, very easily.

• More about healthful sources of calcium, what foods to eat, or eat more of to avoid or combat anaemia.

Anaemia can be a sign of kidney disease, can also be a sign of blood loss from your digestive tract caused by gastro-intestinal irritation or even colon cancer, or can be side effects of drugs. If you’re anaemic, don’t immediately rush out to get iron tablets or supplements. It’s always best to turn to natural iron sources first through diet. You need iron in your body to build haemoglobin.

Please note that these health and nutrition lesson plans are not dieting classes. Diets don’t work. And if they temporarily work, it won’t be permanent or will be dangerous because you end up deficient in important nutrients, vitamins or minerals that your body needs for good subsistence.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes. The disease was rare in Asia, Africa and South America until the Western diet moved in. It often improves with a plant-based, low-glycemic index diet.

Our health and nutrition lessons plans for diabetes, heart disease, cancer and getting nutrition are based on research and backed by scientific evidence. Eating a more plant-based diet, restricting or eliminating fats and oils, and eating unprocessed or minimally-processed whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes can reduce cholesterol, help to lose weight, improve kidney function, and is much easier than having to limit food portions.
